Which Wi-Fi extender to choose?
Before you buy, here is what you need to know to avoid picking the wrong equipment — whether your router is from Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt.
Simple extender or mesh system?
- Classic extender: the cheapest, picks up the existing Wi-Fi and rebroadcasts it. Often creates a second network (with "-2" in the name), which forces you to switch networks as you move around the home.
- Mesh system (several units): more expensive, but a single Wi-Fi network everywhere, with automatic hand-over from one unit to the next. Recommended for large homes or thick walls, common in older Geneva buildings.
What really matters before buying
- Placement: a badly placed extender (too far from the router) is useless. It has to receive a good signal in order to rebroadcast it.
- Compatibility with your router (Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt): most off-the-shelf extenders work with every router, but the ones supplied by the provider are sometimes simpler to set up.
- The number of rooms and walls to cross: a studio doesn't need the same equipment as a three-storey house.
- Price: no point paying for a high-end mesh system if a simple CHF 40 extender is enough for one extra room.
My honest advice
In most Geneva flats, a good simple extender, well placed, is enough. Mesh mainly makes sense for houses or duplex/triplex flats. If you are not sure, I can analyse your home and recommend the equipment you actually need — not the most expensive.
